Lancers work for themselves. They take contracts, recover valuable material and sell what they bring back to the city. They can work inside the city, but their willingness to enter the Outerlands gives them access to opportunities other people won't take. A successful recovery can pay well. Equipment, food, transport and the risk of coming home empty are their responsibility.

How Lancers work

The name comes from the salvaged disabling lances many carry. A Lancer might recover an intact servo, find clothing in an abandoned store or bring back a pump already wanted by a buyer. Knowing what a customer needs can be worth more than returning with a truck full of unidentified scrap.

Their clothing is usually recovered civilian outdoor gear, chosen for the person and the job. Packs carry water, food, a local radio and other supplies alongside weapons and recovery equipment. Lancers can form Strike Teams for larger contracts without becoming permanent corporate staff. Working independently still means paying other people for repairs, lodging and services they can't provide themselves.
