More than ten thousand people live in the city, rebuilding from what survived the Turning. Corporations operate water, power and other services. Lancers recover the material those businesses need. Independent synths do much of the physical work. Some streets are already busy and well maintained. Others are still being cleared, repaired or rebuilt while people live next door.

Life in the city

The city grows a building or a usable section at a time. A sound concrete frame can become apartments above a shop, with unfinished bays waiting for windows or service connections. Contractors use recovered parts because the city hasn't recreated the manufacturing capacity of the Old World.

There is no government running the whole city. People make agreements about the assets they use and the work they do together. That creates opportunities to own something and improve it, but also disputes over prices, access and who gets to decide. The city's progress depends on both the work being done and the terms people are willing to accept for it.

The Tower's single copper center rises above exactly two ivory supports and unfinished equipment bays at its base.
