Dimers is the name survivors use for the people remaining after the Turning. It comes from the belief that roughly one tenth of humanity survived. Nobody can verify that number without global communication. What people do know is how many relatives, neighbors and colleagues they've lost, and how few communities they've been able to contact since.
The losses continued after the initial attacks as food, water and medical systems failed. The thirty-minute spread of the Servo Virus was the beginning of that catastrophe, not a count of how quickly people died.
Dimers have different accounts of what happened and why they survived. Some had supplies or useful skills. Some received help at the right moment. The name gives them a shared reference without making those experiences identical. It also includes people now raising children in the New Order, where stories of the Old World describe conveniences those children may never have known.
