Orbinet was the Old World's orbital data and computing network. Ground terminals connected homes, businesses and public infrastructure to satellites above them. Governments had enormous influence over the network, and many systems depended on it. Orbinet carried the Servo Virus during the Turning. Much of the orbital hardware remains, but the global service has not been restored.

A terminal was only one part of the system. It needed working power and a connection to satellites that were coordinated with the rest of the network. When ground infrastructure failed, ordinary users lost access even where their own receiver remained intact.

The city's engineers see the surviving orbital equipment as a possible way to reconnect isolated communities without rebuilding every ground route first. That is the purpose many Corpos want for the Tower. It would still require recovered equipment, functioning software and a coordinated cluster. An old receiver pointed at the sky cannot restore those things by itself.
