The Outerlands include residential areas that the city has not reclaimed. Houses and garages can contain useful windows, tools, clothing and equipment alongside wrecked vehicles and damaged servos. Some buildings are still largely intact. Others have become unsafe through damage and neglect. Lancers return to these neighborhoods because ordinary recovered goods can have immediate buyers in the city.
The Turning left objects in place while breaking the systems that made the neighborhood usable. Water damage spread, roads became blocked and buildings went without maintenance. A room that looks accessible from outside can contain a collapsed floor or an active machine.
Knowledge of a location is therefore part of a Lancer's work. A previous trip may reveal useful stock or an easier route, but conditions can change. Recoveries remove material, storms create new damage and surviving servos may become active around powered equipment. A quiet street is a place to assess, not evidence that every building has been cleared.
