Independent synths work in the city's workshops, markets and infrastructure businesses under agreements they choose to accept. A converted body can support several kinds of work depending on its skills and equipment. In this repair shop, a recovered synth earns money fixing a Lancer's pack. The customer receives a service, and the synth gets paid for providing it.

Employment can create relationships that continue beyond a single recovery. The Lancer who brought the body to SynthWorks may later become a customer or colleague. That connection doesn't make the synth obliged to work for them.

Synths also need access to parts, power and maintenance, so pay and working conditions have practical consequences. A repair job may suit a civilian hand module better than carrying heavy stock. Another synth may prefer a different trade. The city benefits from having capable individuals who can choose to do useful work, while still having to negotiate the terms that make those jobs worth taking.
