The Trace S1 is a dedicated handheld scanner that helps Lancers assess unfamiliar places and machines. It combines local sensor observations with stored information about equipment families. Physical controls and a compact display keep the device separate from the lost internet. A reading can reveal useful evidence, but a quiet or obstructed view doesn't prove that a site is clear.
Different sensors answer different questions. A thermal observation may show heat while another view helps identify a shape. Damage, obstructions or the absence of a signal can leave part of the situation unknown. A Ranger operating without communications is one reason a signal search alone is not enough.
The scanner works with local information rather than a live global database. Experience with a building or a recognizable housing can add context that the device lacks. Lancers pay for equipment that helps them judge a job, but they still have to decide whether the available evidence is enough to continue.
