The Type R Ranger is a huge military servo built for long deployments across difficult terrain. It carries large battery reserves and can keep operating without regular communication. Some survived the Turning with the destructive order still active. A Ranger can tear into a generator or vehicle that ordinary civilian frames would struggle to damage, making one encounter expensive for an entire community.
Rangers can cross mountains, desert terrain and stretches of water. Solar recharging extends their time in the field, and some carry armor panels that adjust their appearance to the surroundings. They are difficult to spot, especially when they aren't transmitting.
Different equipment can be fitted to the same heavy body. A Ranger recovered in good condition could support work that a civilian synth cannot, but recovering one requires far more equipment and coordination. Its mass also makes transport and maintenance expensive. Lancers weighing that return have to account for the possibility that the machine will destroy the vehicle or equipment they brought to recover it.
